One particular question we are frequently asked is about the difference between a <strong>casket<\/strong> and a <strong>coffin<\/strong>. What seems like a straightforward question actually has quite a complex answer, with roots stretching back hundreds of years. On the one hand both a <strong>coffin<\/strong> and a <strong>casket<\/strong> refer to the form of a \u2018container\u2019 used to move a deceased person\u2019s body. In America the term typically used is <strong>casket<\/strong> and in the UK we tend to still refer to <strong>coffin<\/strong>s. But this is not just colloquialisms; it\u2019s actually down to the shape of each. A <strong>casket<\/strong> is rectangular with four sides, long side bar handles and a hinged lid; whilst a <strong>coffin<\/strong> has six-sides, a traditional tapered shape at the feet, a wider section to accommodate the shoulders, smaller handles along the side and a fully removable lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason each country uses different names is mainly because they prefer different shapes \u2013 therefore the terminology used is accurate. Americans tend to favour the rectangular <strong>casket<\/strong> style while us Brits still choose the hexagonal <strong>coffin<\/strong>. In more recent times the angular nature of the <strong>coffin<\/strong> has been rounded and smoothed, especially in teardrop <strong>coffin<\/strong>s made using natural materials (<strong>willow <\/strong> and bamboo) but we still refer to them as <strong>coffin<\/strong>s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_about_ashes_caskets\"><\/span><strong>What about ashes <strong>casket<\/strong>s?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Just to add further confusion, the term <strong>casket<\/strong> can also refer to an ashes container, which is probably where some of the confusion comes from in the UK. We see <strong>coffin<\/strong>s as being used for holding the body and <strong>casket<\/strong>s for holding the cremated remains of our loved one. And that reference to our loved one is relevant here because the etymology of <strong>casket<\/strong> is a receptacle for holding precious or valued objects \u2013 which we think is a fitting description for its purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both words have French origin (back to cassette or case) and today you may still even hear someone referring to \u2018the coffers\u2019 in financial terms when collecting money.
